The REGEN Fiber Recycling Facility

When we were asked to design a facility for REGEN Fiber, we knew that this project would be inventive but difficult. REGEN Fiber’s vision to recycle wind turbine blades into sustainable fibers required a facility that was functional and environmentally responsible. As experts in pre-engineered steel buildings, we were ready to take on this challenge and deliver a structure that would set new standards in the industry.

The Demand for Wind Blade Recycling

Wind energy is a clean, renewable source that is vital for our sustainable future. However, it also presents a pressing challenge: the disposal of the turbine blades. These blades are massive and don’t decompose. That’s where REGEN Fiber stepped in, with a mission to transform these blades into valuable raw materials. Such a recycling process is necessary for a sustainable energy sector.

Understanding the importance of this project, we were committed to creating a recycling facility that would exceed expectations in terms of functionality, durability, and sustainability.

Reich Construction LLC, led by industry veteran Bruno Reich, specializes in pre-engineered steel buildings across the U.S. With 40 years of expertise and over 1500 successful projects, we ensure cost-effective, sustainable solutions. Accredited by AIA, MBCEA, and USGBC, our services include complete design, engineering, permitting, budgeting, and construction. The Magnitude of the Operation

The scale of the operation was immense: an 80,000-square-foot manufacturing complex that would house the entire recycling process. It had to accommodate the complicated manufacturing process, storage for end products, and various support functions.

“Scope of this project is two buildings, 75 feet wide, 490 feet long. It’s for a new wind recycling operation here at Regen Fiber, first of its kind, and we believe it’s gonna be a game changer for the wind industry.”

Bill Oberfoell, General Manager of REGEN Manufacturing

Our approach combined our 40 years of experience with the latest construction technology, so every aspect of the building was customized to the needs of REGEN Fiber. We used our knowledge of pre-engineered steel structures to create a building that was durable and environmentally friendly.

Construction Halted by a Tornado

As we went ahead with the construction of REGEN Fiber’s facility, nature had other plans. A vicious tornado swept through the area, leaving destruction in its wake.

“On March 31st, we had a terrible wind event here and unfortunately our processing building, which was framed but no skin on the building was blown down. It flattened our entire building.”

Bill Oberfoell, General Manager of REGEN Manufacturing

The building we had been working on suffered significant damage. It was a setback, but not the end of the story.

Reconstructing REGEN Fiber’s Plant

Our team worked closely with REGEN Fiber to assess the damage and devise a plan that would restore and enhance the facility. We drew on our experience to build a new structure that would be more resistant to extreme weather events.

This time, we incorporated additional safety features and reinforced the building’s design to withstand similar or worse conditions in the future.

“So now we’re rebuilding the building that went down in the tornado. What we provide is that 40 years of experience of encountering everything and being able to work on the fly on our feet, make it all come together, uh, fabricate parts if we need to in order to make all of those details come together and work for the owner”

The Role of Pre-Engineered Steel in Sustainable Building

Why pre-engineered steel, you ask? It’s simple. Steel is one of the most sustainable materials available. It’s durable and fully recyclable. This aligns perfectly with the sustainable vision of REGEN Fiber.

The framing, siding, and roofing of REGEN Fiber’s complex made the best use of the material available and are 100% recyclable. The structures at REGEN Fiber accommodate a complicated manufacturing process, a warehouse for end products, and various spaces for incidental support functions.

Advancing Sustainability in Wind Energy Waste Management

By converting old turbine blades into reinforcement fiber, the team enhanced the strength of concrete—a win for the environment and the construction industry. This forward-thinking approach drives us to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in our field.

Four Decades of Crafting Quality: Reich Construction’s Track Record

Our track record speaks volumes about our capabilities. Each project we undertake is an opportunity to showcase our commitment to quality and innovation. From community buildings in Selby on the Bay to industrial complexes like the Dalitso Cannabis Processing Facility, we have shown that we can rise to the challenge and exceed expectations. Our clients trust us because they know we deliver lasting value.

“Bruno’s been a great partner. Obviously there’s a lot of moving pieces in the puzzle doing this type of a project, throw in the storm damage, it made it more complex. Therefore it’s been great to work with Bruno, to coordinate a lot of the different, different moving parts and be able to keep us on track, with a simple explanation. Now he’s got a great depth of knowledge. We have never done this before, so it’s one of those things where we rely on the expertise in the field and obviously Bruno brings that to the table for us.”
